studio 6

I make art, contemplate, write and behave creatively in studio 6 at Hart-Witzen http://www.hartwitzengallery.com/studio6.html in the NoDa arts district of Charlotte, North Carolina. My studio overlooks a tranquil patch of grass and trees. My bubble wrap curtains allow me to see out while letting the light in.

A studio practice of working daily can be challenging. I have a routine that was at one time very obsessive. Now I am much more laid back. Lately to warm up my creativity I have been painting on photographs. Then I begin working on my installation- a system of organisms that are becoming more topographical and map like. I am using metal wire to crochet it. By afternoon I am painting! It takes me that long to get to the larger modular works.

artist statement

My recent work focuses on systems and how they become an integrated whole.  It is my interest in philosophy, archeology, science, bricolage, topology and cartography that drives me to investigate and explore.  By drawing upon many combinations of the parts to create a whole, I arrive at harmony and balance in my work. The final work contains interwoven elements of drawing and painting, high and low, fluid and linear, controlled and spontaneous, throughout my process of art making. Ultimately, each of my paintings is a combination and recombination of the inspiration, layered with process and discovery.
